A mountainous island in the Mediterranean, Corsica was connected to the south of France about 30 million years ago when a long process of drifting began its detachment from the European continent. Currently closer to Italy than France, the Corsican mountains have many peaks above 2000m. The most important, Monte Cinto, culminates at 2706m.
