Largest island of the Gambier archipelago, Mangareva is a high island surrounded with 3 other islands by the same barrier reef. Motus are present to the north and east, the lagoon being open to the west and south. Mount Duff culminates at 441m and the ridge going north opposes two large bays, including the one where Rikitea is located, to the east.
